Signs Your Pet May Need an Emergency Veterinarian

Signs Your Pet May Need an Emergency Veterinarian

It is recommended that pets visit their veterinarian at least once per year for a wellness exam and preventative care. However, pets can get sick unexpectedly just like any other member of your family. In those situations, they may require emergency veterinary care at a 24-hour hospital. If you notice any of the following signs in your pet, we are available for you 24/7.

Your pet is not eating as usual.

If your dog or cat normally has a healthy appetite and suddenly refuses food, it’s a sign you need to call the vet. Changes in eating habits can indicate dental problems, gastrointestinal illnesses, and even obstructions in the digestive tract that could require surgery.

Your pet has diarrhea, vomiting, or changes in stool.

Often, diarrhea and vomiting will pass quickly and not be cause for alarm. However, any time you notice your pet having gastrointestinal distress, you should monitor him closely and call the vet’s office if symptoms do not clear up within a day. If symptoms last longer than a day and/or there is blood in the vomit or diarrhea, your pet should be seen as soon as possible.

Your pet is lethargic or has difficulty moving around.

As pets get older, they may experience more mobility issues. However, if your pet is suddenly much more lethargic or seems to have difficulty even getting outside to go to the bathroom, it’s time to alert your veterinarian.

Your pet has changes in his coat or skin.

Any irritation to your pet’s skin or coat can be very itchy, painful, and generally uncomfortable for your pet. There are many causes of skin disease in our pets and many different treatment options depending on the cause.  If your pet’s skin is irritated, schedule an appointment with your vet to decide what testing and treatment are the best options to get your pet comfortable again as soon as possible.
